Michael Gordin talked about his book Red Cloud at Dawn: Truman, Stalin, and the End of the Atomic Monopoly (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; September 29, 2009). In his book Michael Gordin, history of science professor at Princeton University, recounted the Soviet Union’s first atomic test bomb, “First Lightning” that detonated on August 29, 1949. Mr. Gordin relayed that the test brought an end to sole American ownership of nuclear weapons and ushered in a new wave of foreign policy machinations and espionage between the United States and the Soviet Union. He talked about the nature of the intelligence issues that informed diplomacy and read passages from the book. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
