Military Recruiting on Campus

The guests discussed the Supreme Court case to be heard December 6, 2005, Rumsfeld v. F.A.I.R. (Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights), concerning the constitutionality of the Solomon Act as well as John Roberts' views on the issue. The act mandates that institutes of higher education such as colleges and law schools will lose their federal funding if they ban military recruiters. The Solomon Amendment was originally passed in the wake of the 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy when law schools stated that military recruiters would be barred from campuses if the military was discriminatory. They responded to questions and comments from viewers.

Joseph Zengerle is the executive director of the Clinic for Legal Assistance to Servicemembers (CLAS) at George Mason University. He has joined students and other professors from various universities in filing an amicus curiae brief in support of the petitioner, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld. close
