Anders Fogh Rasmussen, during his last month as the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, talked about the future of NATO. He talked about the NATO summit earlier in the month in Wales, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and the continuing threat to security posed by ISIL*. He condemned the murders by ISIL of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and of British aid worker David Haines. Following his remarks, he took questions from the audience. This event in Brussels was hosted by Carnegie Europe.

*The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an extremist Sunni militant group that has called itself the Islamic State.
