A portrait of the first African American member of Congress, Joseph Rainey of South Carolina, was unveiled. Representative Rainey served from 1870-1878. Reverend Coughlin offered the opening prayer and the program contained singing of “America the Beautiful.” Members of Congress and Jody Wingate, the great granddaughter of Joseph Rainy, spoke at the unveiling. The oil painting was painted by Simmie Knox. close
