Former U.S. Senator and Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and his wife, playwright Janet Langhart Cohen, hosted a conference at the National Press Club on “Race and Reconciliation in America.” They are the co-authors of Love in Black and White, the autobiographical account of their bi-racial marriage.

After introductory remarks, Lonnie Bunch, Ron Walters, and Jay Winik made presentations on “The Arc of History and How We Got Here,” and Katrina Browne and Noel Ignatiev made follow-up comments. Ms. Browne talked about her discovery that her ancestors were the largest slave trading family in the country and the myth that only the South was responsible for slavery. Participants engaged in discussion.

Mark Planning and Clifford Alexander made presentations in session 1, entitled “Justice: Is it Color-Blind?” John C. Connolly and Harriett Washington made comments afterward, and the panelists and other participants then engaged in discussion. close
