The book addressed the ways in which religion had recently emerged in the arenas of politics, education, and social organizations. The editors argued that America was moving away from a distinction between church and state and that religion, its institutions, and its leaders had increasingly emerged as topics of debate in many public and political forums. Co-editor Wilfred McClay was joined by E.J. Dionne, Jr. who wrote the foreword to the book. After the presentation, the two speakers answered questions from members of the audience.
