A coalition of veterans groups talked about their efforts to help protect privately-funded memorials on public land. Liberty Legal Institute had filed an amicus brief on their behalf in the case of Pleasant Grove City v. Summum to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court the next day. Pleasant Grove, Utah, was appealing a 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the city was violating the First Amendment rights of the Summum religious group by not accepting their monument in a park that already held a monument displaying the Ten Commandments. The veterans groups fear that this precedent would lead to all privately-funded monuments being removed. This would include thousands of veteran and war memorials.
