Author and Professor Frances Fox Piven talked about the 2004 elections and addressed charges of voter fraud and voter suppression, the latter of which she said has a long history in the United States. Professor Piven argued that new progressive social movements need to be created to stop the Democratic Party from moving to the right. She spoke after receiving a lifetime achievement award from the University of Wisconsin’s Havens Center. After her address “Elections and Protest Movements in the Struggle for Democracy” she responded to questions from members of the audience.
