John Stewart talked about his book Witness to the Promised Land: Observations on Congress and the Presidency from the Pages of "Christianity and Crisis", published by Seven Locks Press. Mr. Stewart wrote a series of reports for Christianity and Crisis magazine from Washington during the 1960s while working with Senator/Vice President Humphrey. He offered an insider’s view of how legislation such as the civil rights legislation was being crafted and advanced or thwarted by different factions. He described the major actors of the day, and the complex procedures and personalities of the Senate. In this volume, Mr. Stewart presents the original columns with short current commentaries. At the event, Mr. Stewart talked about the role of religion in the civil rights movement and how that compares with how religion is being used today. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
