The panelists described domestic politics in Iran and the current Iranian leadership’s role in wanting nuclear programs. Topics included the political consolidation of the Iranian mullahs, the failure of Europe and the U.S. to develop a coherent policy toward Iran, and the power of the Revolutionary Guard (the military). Michael McFaul of the Hoover Institution commented on Abbas Milani’s presentation and criticized President George W. Bush’s foreign policy toward Iran in the past four years.
