Newseum hosted a full-day symposium titled “Examining Opinion and Bias in the News: The Grant Howell Legacy Symposium” that explored the perceptions and realities of bias in news coverage.

The first afternoon panel, moderated by Mr. Urschel, examined “News Media or Noisemakers: Who is a Journalist?” Panelists discussed the credibility of journalists, the public’s perception of the field of journalism, and ideal qualifications for reporters and columnists. They also talked about means of assessing objectivity, business and financial pressures placed on journalists, and the process of bring a story to print. Following the panel, participants responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
