After welcoming remarks by John Darnton, New York Times reporter James Risen talked about the issue of the relationship between the press, the government, and national security. He talked about his case, in which a U.S. Supreme Court decision was pending, for refusing to testify against one of his sources. Then panelists discussed the Espionage Act, recent court decisions, and Justice Department guidelines on subpoenas to reporters.

“The Long Arm of the Law” was the first panel of “Sources and Secrets: A Conference on the Press, the Government and National Security,” held at The TimesCenter and presented by the George Polk Awards and The New York Times in cooperation with CUNY TV, the Media Law Resource Center, and the Media Law Resource Center Institute. close
