The Heritage Foundation sponsored a speech be columnist George Will talked about how presidential leadership styles had changed since the ratification of the Constitution. Mr. Will said that the notion that the president should be a strong leader entered the American political thought relatively recently. He said the founding fathers had seen strong executive leadership as a threat to a republic, and noted that when Woodrow Wilson began using public appearances to advocate legislation that a strong president with a distinct personality became common. close
