A panel discussion was held on the late Peter W. Rodman (1943-2008) and his posthumous book, Presidential Command: Power, Leadership, and the Making of Foreign Policy from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush (Knopf; fifth edition January 6, 2009). Peter Rodman, former senior fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution, served on the National Security Councils of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. In his book Mr. Rodman looked at the relationship between U.S. presidents and the diplomatic, military, and intelligence bureaucracies that they have to deal with and how that affects the success of their foreign policies. Among the topics the panelists addressed were presidential leadership styles, the role of the Cabinet and advisers, and reaction to events that have shaped U.S. foreign policy. They also commented on the prospects for the Obama administration. Carlos Pascual made introductory remarks and moderated the discussion. After the program, the featured speakers took audience members' questions.
