Senators John McCain and Barack Obama were interviewed separately by Judy Woodruff and Richard Stengel. The candidates greeted each other as they passed on the stage. The interviews focused on the presidential candidates' views on service and civic engagement in the post-September 11, post-Katrina world.

During pauses for commercial breaks in the live program, video clips were shown of events of the day at the dedication ceremony for the Pentagon Memorial and the congressional remembrance ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Also a report was made on the candidates' joint visit to Ground Zero in New York City and a telephone interview with Michelle Nunn about the forum was played.

“The ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum” was the opening event of the ServiceNation Summit. It was held in the Roone Arledge Theatre at Columbia University. close
