Mr. Potter and Mr. Walker talked about a plan to transform the U.S. Postal Service in light of decreasing mail volume and revenue. They said the primary focus of the service would be to maintain universal service, but new approaches would have to be developed. Among the issues they addressed were cutting costs by decreasing the number of employees, potential legislative reforms to provide management more leeway in decision-making, and the creation of new business models to meet future challenges. They also addressed concerns over recent anthrax mailings and pipe bombings of mailboxes.
