Professor Johannsen talked about the career of President Polk and why he has consistently been labeled by historians as a “near great” president. He talked about Polk’s nomination by the Democratic party as a dark horse candidate elected on the ninth round of balloting, his view on abolition, his Jacksonian views and policies, the addition of Oregon and Texas to the Union, and the Mexican War. After his remarks he answered questions from the audience.
