Mr. Roy and Mr. Abbas talked about the influence of fundamentalist Islam on Middle East politics, culture, and religion. Among the topics they addressed were the causes of religious extremism, the influence of radical sects and political parties like the Taliban in Afghanistan, and current international efforts to combat terrorism. Mr. Roy was the author of Globalized Islam: The Search for a New Ummah and Mr. Abbas was the author of Pakistan’s Drift into Extremism.
