Colonel Fitz-Enz talked about the Battle of Plattsburg and the implications of the battle on the War of 1812. The Battle of Plattsburg was the British plan to capture the territory of upstate New York by taking control of Lake Champlain with the largest foreign army ever to invade the United States. The small U.S. Navy, led by Thomas Macdonough, defeated the British fleet at Plattsburgh in August 1814. Colonel Fitz-Enz said this battle was crucial to the American victory. He showed some pictures and maps during his presentation and then answered questions from members of the audience.

Colonel Fitz-Enz retired from the U.S. Army in 1993, after serving for thirty years. A signal corpsman, he helped set up and maintain the White House-Moscow "hot line." He is the author of The Final Invasion: Plattsburgh, the War of 1812's Most Decisive Battle, published by Cooper Square Press.
