As part of the sixth Emerging Issues Forum, former Pres. Carter discussed America’s place in the world as the face of international relations has drastically changed. He talked about his work with the Carter Center and the center’s areas of involvement and goals. Pres. Carter talked about the center’s involvement in U.S. and Soviet relations. His examples described a Soviet media content analysis study to determine changing policies and the creation of new human rights bill. In Latin America, the center has been active in trying to help this region foster democracy, peace, and human rights. His participation in election monitoring was described. The center’s relationship to past negotiations between Middle Eastern countries was also discussed. Pres. Carter concluded by talking about the center’s dedication to peace through non-military conflict prevention and resolution. He used the current Persian Gulf war as an example. close
