Rehema Ellis moderated a discussion about how best to help young people. Topics included the failures of public schools, the changing face of the country, immigration, affirmative action, No Child Left Behind, and the best ways philanthropists can invest in education. Sherry Lansing asked from the audience about how success is measured for merit pay for teachers, and recruiting retired people as teachers.

Michael Milken served a prison term after making a fortune selling “junk bonds.” Justice Alan C. Page is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. They are both active in education philanthropy.

“Philanthropy and Education” was a program of the Slate 60 Conference on Innovative Philanthropy, which was co-sponsored by Slate Magazine, The William J. Clinton Foundation and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and held at the Clinton Presidential Library. close
