Peter Carlson talked about his book K Blows Top: A Cold War Comic Interlude, Starring Nikita Khrushchev, America's Most Unlikely Tourist (PublicAffairs; May 11, 2009). At the fiftieth anniversay of the event, Peter Carlson recalls the inexplicable two-week tour of the United States by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev amidst the tensions of the Cold War in September 1959. Mr. Carlson remarks on the humorous musings of the Soviet premier as he traveled across the country, his meetings with American celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, his interest in American supermarkets, and his anger in being denied a visit to Disneyland. The guest interviewer was Sergei Khrushchev, the son of Nikita Khrushchev, who was one of the people interviewed by Mr. Carlson as he researched the book. Peter Carlson was formerly a feature writer and reporter for the Washington Post. Prior to joining the newspaper he was a reporter for the Boston Herald-American and senior writer for People magazine. He is the author of Roughneck: The Life and Times of Big Bill Haywood. Sergei Khrushchev is the son of Nikita Khrushchev. He was formerly a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and first deputy director of research at the Control Computer Institute in Moscow. He is the author of several books, including Nikita Khrushchev and the Creation of a Super Power. Mr. Khrushchev is currently a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.
