The House Armed Services Committee concluded its series of hearings on U.S. policies in the Persian Gulf by hearing testimony on the use of diplomacy to resolve the crisis in the Middle East. George Ball said that diplomacy was now an unfeasible means to a solution to the Persian Gulf crisis, after President Bush committed America to enforce a complete withdrawal by sending troops to Saudi Arabia. He also said that he believed the blockade of Iraq and sanctions were effective means of resolution, which would be defeated by the use of military power in the region. Joseph Sisco said that a comprehensive solution to the crisis in the Middle East is impossible due to the shifting nature of politics in the area. Mr. Sisco also said, however, that the advantages attained via a diplomatic solution make a course of diplomacy worth pursuing, but without sacrificing the complete and total withdrawal of Kuwait by Iraq. close
