Representatives from the State, Justice, and Treasury departments as well as foreign affairs analysts testified before the House Financial Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee on a recent cash transfer by the U.S. to Iran in settlement of a debt owed from an unfulfilled arms deal in the 1970s. The payment was made shortly before Iran released U.S. prisoners, prompting questions from Republicans on the committee as to whether the payment was ransom for the prisoners' release, as claimed by some Iranian leaders. At the end of the question series with the first panel, subcommittee Ranking Member Al Green (D-TX) said he objected to the hearing, and led other Democrats on the committee in leaving the hearing before the second panel was seated for testimony. close
