The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the reauthorization of the Patriot Act, parts of which were due to expire at the end of 2005. Witnesses opposed the extension of provisions in the act and testified about civil liberties concerns, the potential for abuses by law enforcement agencies, and maintaining domestic security without the provisions.

They also talked about other human rights issues such as the treatment of detainees and prisoners by U.S. officials, which prompted Chairman Sensenbrenner to admonish committee members for going outside the limited scope of the hearings before gaveling the committee out of session. Minority members objected to this action and continued questioning witnesses briefly after the chairman had adjourned and walked out of the hearing with the gavel. close
