Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced that Tuesday, January 19, 2010, is the special election date to fill the Senate seat vacated by the death of Senator Edward Kennedy. He stated that he is working with the Massachusetts Legislature on legislation to name an interim replacement. He responded to questions from reporters following his remarks.

He also addressed the issue of a move in 2004 by the Democratic-controlled Legislature to deny then-Governor Mitt Romney the power to name a replacement for Senator John Kerry in the event he won the presidential election. Governor Patrick said that naming an interim replacement is “the only way to ensure that Massachusetts is fully represented.” close
