William Hague, the Conservative Party’s Shadow Foreign Secretary since December 2005, laid out the Conservative Party’s foreign policy goals. He called for a thorough review of defense spending, and less reliance on economic sanctions, which he said are losing their potency, saying that Britain must accept a less interventionist role in the world due to budget pressures. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

“The Future of British Foreign Policy with a Conservative Government” was a speech at the International Institute for Strategic Studies given on July 21, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. London time at Arundel House, in London.
