Leaders of the Democratic and Republican Parties in Mississippi talked about how the South has changed politically since the Civil Rights movement. Among the topics they addressed were Mississippi’s unique political landscape, changing party affiliations within Southern states, and the degree to which race has played a role in politics. They also responded to questions from the audience.

The William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation and Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics presented a symposium in Overby Center Auditorium on the transformation of politics as the result of events in the region. The second panel of the symposium, “How Events in Mississippi Changed American Politics,” was on “The Realignment of Political Parties in Mississippi and the South.” close
