Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) testified on National Park Service (NPS) funding issues and the impact of budget cuts on services and infrastructure. He called for the creation of a national endowment led by a national park “champion” to help pay for deferred maintenance and asked senators to resist the urge to add new parks to the system, especially at a time when there was a lack of resources for critical infrastructure. Then NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis told the committee that the national parks are facing an $11.5 billion deferred maintenance backlog that would keep increasing under current funding levels. close
