Professor Carlton Basmajian talked about the Northwest Ordinance, which was an act of Congress in 1787 to organize and govern the newly acquired territory from the Ohio River to the Mississippi. He described the 18th century national planning effort which divided this territory into a grid pattern and proposed a transportation network of roads and canals. He argued that this process of development was also applied to the Louisiana Purchase. close
