Members of the House of Lords and House of Commons participated in the State Opening of Parliament in London. The Queen outlined the government’s plan for the upcoming year, focusing on economic stability, climate change and the upcoming G-20 summit. The speech also introduced thirteen bills, including the banking bill which will impose tougher regulations on the financial sector.
Footage was BBC’s coverage hosted by anchor Huw Edwards and included the Queen’s procession to Westminster, ceremonial functions, and news analysis of the events. Topics included the arrest of Conservative Member of Parliament Damian Green for leaking government secrets. The controversial November 27, 2008, raid of his parliamentary offices was the first time Parliament had been searched since 1642.
