Author/Professor Barry O’Connell talked about the book he edited, On Our Own Ground: The Complete Writings of William Apess, A Pequot published by the University of Massachusetts Press. William Apess was the first American Indian to be published. He examined the neglected works of this Native American writer who revealed racism of that time period. Professor O’Connell explored the writer’s family life, his writings and his death in 1839. He read passages from William Apess' works and explained how he shaped 19th Century New England history. Following his prepared remarks he answered questions from the audience. close
