The Charlotte Mint was one of the first branches of the Federal Mint outside of Philadelphia. It was established in the 1830s, after extensive gold mining began in North Carolina, and operated until the Civil War. In 1936 it became the first art museum in the state. Cheryl Palmer talked about the history of gold production in North Carolina and the mint building.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) on their “2011 LCV Cities Tour” were in Charlotte, N.C., on August 29-September 2, 2011, to feature the history and literary life of the city that would host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Working with the Time Warner local cable affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
