Undersecretary Reeder and others participated in a ceremony commemorating the battle for Okinawa. The Pentagon is remembering the 1945 Easter Sunday start of Operation Iceberg, and the fight for that strategic island. The U.S. suffered about 68,000 casualties, including 12,000 dead. The Japanese dead totaled more than 100,000. The 82-day battle for Okinawa was the largest Pacific battle of World War II and the largest amphibious assault in history. close
