Presidential biographer Robert Dallek gave his perspective on President Obama’s first year in office. Starting from an analysis of the foreign policy challenges facing President Obama, he looked back to comparable periods of transition in the administrations of earlier presidents to see how a new leader can find orientation when confronting economic and military pressures around the globe, balancing American interests and international expectations. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

“Obama’s First Year: War, Peace and the Economy in Historical Perspective” was held in the Purdue University Stewart Center at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. It was one of four lectures in the 2010 Louis Martin Sears Lecture Series, which was produced by the history department in conjunction with Purdue Convocations.
