Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue debated in the campaign for the seat being vacated by Democratic Governor Mike Easley. Divisive topics included school vouchers, oil drilling off the North Carolina coast, and attack ads. Other topics included enforcement of immigration laws, lowering the drinking age, and ads by outside groups.
