Shirn Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer and human rights advocate, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She used the occasion to criticize countries that do not allow the full participation of women in society. She also urged work for human rights and against poverty and AIDS. Ms. Ebadi criticized the actions of the United States after September 11. She also discussed other issues, including Islam and modernization efforts in the Middle East.
