Eula Biss talked about her book Notes from No Man’s Land: American Essays (Graywolf Press; February 3, 2009). In her essays she explores race and racial identity from multiple angles, during major events in the culture. She presents a picture of America through racially diverse perspectives. Ms. Biss includes her own personal experiences such as experiencing the events of September 11, 2001, from a locked-down school in Harlem, reporting for an African-American newspaper in San Diego, watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina from a college town in Iowa, and settling in Chicago’s most diverse neighborhood. She responded to questions from members of the audience.

Eula Biss is author of The Ballonists. She teaches non-fiction writing at Northwestern University and is co-editor of Essay Press. close
