The USS Nimitz and its crew were profiled through footage shot while the ship was stationed off the California coast over summer 1997. The Nimitz was commissioned in 1975 and named after World War II admiral Chester A. Nimitz. It weighs about 97,000 tons and carries a standard complement of 85 aircraft. Two more Nimitz-class carriers were under construction, the Harry S. Truman and the Ronald Reagan. The Nimitz had been stationed in the Persian Gulf since October 12, 1997. A similar program with more footage and different studio guests and callers aired on October 13, 1997. close
