Panelists discussed Mr. Schlink’s novel The Reader, a fictional account of an illiterate girl in Nazi Germany who learns to read while a guard in a concentration camp. The panel used the book to ask how German citizens could cope or tolerate the Nazi persecution of the Jews. After several questions from the moderator, panelists took questions from the audience. close
