Witnesses from the Departments of State and Defense and U.S. Agency for International Development testified at a hearing on the response to the two major earthquakes in Nepal since April 2015. Questions focused on the humanitarian needs, the challenges to relief efforts, and the long-term implications for the people and infrastructure of the Himalayan country. Witnesses talked about their first-hand experiences overseeing humanitarian efforts in Nepal and challenges including increased gender-based violence against women and children who were more vulnerable to human trafficking in the aftermath of the earthquake, the delay in getting food transferred to the area, and buildings that were not earthquake-resistant. close
