Authors participated in a panel discussion on natural disasters. Ms. Sobel spoke about the solar system and the possible finding of a 10th planet. Professor Emanuel discussed the formation of hurricanes as well as some historical storms. Mr. Winchester talked about earthquakes and the San Francisco disaster of 1906. Following their individual speeches, the panelists collectively responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Mr. Norcross introduced the participants and moderated the panel.

After the panel, live scenes from the street of the Miami Book Fair International were shown briefly. Then Professor Emanuel was interviewed by remote from the BookTV Bus. He discussed the effects of global warming on the upper portion of the oceans. The author also responded to questions and comments from telephone callers.

Simon Winchester is the author of A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906, published by HarperCollins. D close
