Anna Mae Duane talked about problems in teaching the Narrative of Venture Smith and problems that modern audiences have reconciling with his attitudes about capitalism, money, love, and family. After her remarks, illustrated with slides, she responded to questions from members of the audience.
Venture Smith (1729-1805) was a slave who purchased his freedom and went on to become a successful businessman and property owner before the Revolutionary War.
"Keeping His Word: Money, Love, and Privacy in the Narrative of Venture Smith" was the concluding portion of the first day of the annual conference "Documenting Venture Smith: The Story of a Struggle for Democracy," which was held at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection headquarters in Hartford.
