Lerone Bennett, Jr. delivered the keynote address for the 12th annual Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Conference. This year's conference theme is "Literature as History: The Narratives of Black People in Poetry, Prose and Fiction." Mr. Bennett examined the significance of literary expression on the culture and history of people of African ancestry and on American culture at large. He also discussed the responsibility of African American writers to build constructively upon their literary legacy.
