Leaders of the civil rights movement discussed the contribution women have made to the movement to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. They focused on the current situation and the challenges remaining to achieve the goal of freedom that the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., was fighting for, especially in the realm of economic justice. Topics included the need for education and challenges to the Voting Rights Act. The featured concluding speaker was Bernice King, daughter of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Women Leaders of the Movement: Past, Present, and Future” was an event of the Black Women’s Roundtable of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, held at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill. Co-sponsors included National Council of Negro Women, National Action Network, King Center, and Planned Parenthood. close
