Participants briefed reporters on the declining cancer mortality rates in the U.S. which two reports, one by independent researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and another by the National Cancer Institute, have recently highlighted. They attributed the lower rates to both decreases in risky behavior, such as smoking and sunbathing, and improvements in early detection and treatments. They also outlined continuing efforts to lower cancer mortality rates more sharply. close
