Historians Richard Norton Smith and Edith Mayo gave a preview of the second season of the C-SPAN series, “First Ladies: Influence and Image,” which was co-sponsored by the White House Historical Association. They talked about the politics, styles, and ever-changing White House of first ladies from Edith Roosevelt to Michelle Obama. They discussed how the role of first lady continued to grow in the 20th century and how new forms of mass media changed how they were portrayed and how they communicated with the public. Video clips of many first ladies were shown, including the first sound film of a sitting first lady. A video clip of Steve Ford talking about his parents illustrated the intimacy with which modern first families were viewed. close
