Lincoln Bloomfield announced President Bush’s policy decisions and initiatives about land mines, including an acceleration of efforts to end the humanitarian crisis caused by landmines left behind in former conflict areas around the world. They said the U.S. is committed to eliminating persistent landmines of all types from its arsenal and to manufacturing mines that are detectable, but only by U.S. personnel, noting that over the past decade the U.S. has been the world’s largest contributor to humanitarian mine action.
