Group Captain Niall Irving of the British Royal Air Force updated reporters in Riyadh on the events concerning the British military in the Persian Gulf war. He reported on a mission by eight British Tornado warplanes to destroy a liquid propellant plant in Iraq. Grp. Capt. Irving discussed the destruction of a bunker in Baghdad which claimed the lives of several hundred Iraqis. Iraq claimed the bunker was an air raid bunker for civilians, while coalition forces maintained it was a military command and control center and therefore, a legitimate military target. Grp. Capt. Irving reaffirmed the military control center assessment, and labelled the presence of any civilians around such a military target “irresponsible.” close
