The commission heard testimony on the economic impact of defense base closures on affected communities in the sixth of seven hearings on the Department of Defense list of bases slated for closure released earlier in the year. The committee heard testimony from three panels: a panel of government officials, a panel of representatives of defense industries, and a panel of local officials from communities affected by the closings. Issues raised in the hearing included the possible rise in unemployment and decline in business activity accompanying base closures. close
